Professor Tan Soon Keat from Nanyang Technological University Visits Fluid Center for Exchange
Date:2024-04-09 View:

Recently, at the invitation of Professor Wang Xikun, Professor Tan Soon Keat from Nanyang Technological University visited the Fluid Center for exchange and delivered an academic lecture titled "Urban Water Management in Singapore" to faculty and students. He detailed the management knowledge of urban stormwater discharge, water collection, and wastewater treatment. He mentioned that due to Singapore's unique geographic location, its natural water sources are very limited, necessitating more human intervention in water collection and treatment. This has led to related measures by the Singapore government, such as preserving two-thirds of Singapore's land resources undeveloped as a reserve for future development, and setting up 17 water storage facilities in different regions to regulate water supply demands during drought and flood seasons.

In addition, Professor Tan noted that there are four aspects to consider in water resource management: predicting future development needs, ensuring the supply of domestic water, preparing for the future, and controlling and reducing flood disasters. To meet the increased water demand due to population migration and climate change, it is estimated that by 2060, Singapore's newly introduced water and desalinated seawater will account for 55% and 30% of the total urban water use, respectively.

It is reported that Professor Tan is a teacher at the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Nanyang Technological University, and has long been engaged in research in areas such as hydraulics, water energy resources and environment, numerical simulation of hydraulic flow, and applications in urban and coastal engineering. Professor Tan joined Nanyang Technological University in 1984, actively participated in laboratory construction and core curriculum development, and was responsible for establishing four laboratories and setting up three research centers, serving as the director. These include the Maritime Research Center, the DHI-NTU Center, and the NTU-Modern Urban Systems Center. He also served as Deputy Executive Director of the Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute (NEWRI) from 2012 to 2016. Professor Tan's research fields include flow simulation of hydropower stations, dams, pumping stations, docks, urban water resource management, and especially has core advantages in theoretical analysis and simulation modeling, applying these technologies to broader sustainable integrated water resource management. The funding for the projects he has been responsible for totals over 10 million Singapore dollars (approximately 50 million RMB). To date, Professor Tan has published six academic monographs, 177 journal papers, and 132 conference papers, with his published papers cited over 6,000 times and a personal impact factor of 43.
