Professor Zhang Desheng's Project Approved for the 2024 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars

On August 23, the National Natural Science Foundation of China announced the review results for the 2024 concentrated acceptance period projects. Professor Zhang Desheng from the Fluid Center (National Research Center of Pumps) at our university received funding for his project titled "Design Theory of Hydraulic Machinery and Hydrodynamics" under the 2024 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.

For over twenty years, Professor Zhang has dedicated himself to serving the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. He has addressed critical industry challenges related to hydraulic machinery (pumps), specifically the issues of low efficiency and poor cavitation performance. His research has led to the discovery of the nonlinear vortex distribution pattern of efficient impellers and the development of comprehensive monitoring and control technology for cavitation in hydraulic machinery, encompassing "state monitoring, risk assessment, and proactive control." Additionally, he has established nonlinear vortex design theories and methods for axial flow pumps. His findings have been applied to significant national water conservancy projects such as the South-to-North Water Diversion and the Belt and Road Initiative, earning two provincial-level first prizes and making significant contributions to alleviating water scarcity in northern China, drought mitigation, energy conservation, emissions reduction, and supporting the Belt and Road Initiative.

It is noteworthy that Professor Zhang is the second recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in the field of hydraulic machinery in China, following Professor Yuan Shouqi, the former Party Secretary of our university. This achievement further highlights Jiangsu University's leading position in the field of fluid machinery among universities nationwide.
